This Thursday (April 25, 2013) Company H. and The Nashville Psychoanalytical Study Group will present MATTER OF HEART, a documentary on the famous Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Gustav Jung, with producer Michael Whitney in attendance.

The reception will be held at 6:00pm, and the film will begin at 6:30pm.

A panel discussion will be held after the film with:

Wednesday, April 24th, at 9pm, we will have our next council meeting. The focus of this meeting will be the Currey Gallery summer show that Co. H will be curating. Everyone should bring in a list of students from all disciplines whose work you feel should be shown.

Thursday, April the 25th, at 6pm, we will be hosting a screening of Matter of Heart, Mark and Michael Whitney’s documentary on famous psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In conjunction with the screening will be a panel discussion featuring members of Vanderbilt’s psychology and divinity schools.

On Wednesday, May 1st at 9pm, Nashville based artist Chris Roberson will be giving an artist talk entitled Work & Play.

If anyone has any questions about this schedule, don’t hesitate to ask. Any suggestions are obviously more than welcome, regarding anything. You can shoot us a message here or find us around school.

Watkins College of Art, Design & Film presents the Nashville premiere of The Forgotten Space (112 m.), a film essay by Allan Sekula and Noël Burch, on Monday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Watkins Theater. The screening, which is free and open to the public, will be introduced by Assistant Professor Tom Williams.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday, April 10), there will be another Round Table discussion at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film!

Round Table’s mission is to facilitate a dialogue in Nashville about current art practices, theoretical debates, and critical accounts in relation to the larger discourse surrounding contemporary art. This week, we’ll be discussing Burden of Proof - Contemporary Art and Responsibility, by Tom Holert, taken from March 2013’s Artforum. We will be meeting at Watkins College at 9:00pm, in room 804 (upstairs). Anyone’s welcome to join!

Company H Student Critique

Company H will be hosting a student critique on Wednesday, April 3, in anticipation for final projects. We will meet at 9pm in Room 804.

Students of all disciplines are welcome to attend, and set-up should be done prior to critique. All students participating will receive equal time for critique; allotment depending on turnout. Digital media can be brought in on an exterior drive and presented in the 4D lab.

Although this goes without saying, please be willing to engage in a constructive, thoughtful, and respectful dialogue intended to enhance the quality of pieces presented. This is a great opportunity for older students to offer wisdom and tips to younger students, and younger students to offer a fresh perspective or interpretation on more advanced work. Looking forward to seeing everyone (and their work) there!

Hey, everyone!

Here’s the run down for the rest of the semester:

There will be a Company H meeting on Wednesday, April 3rd at 9:10PM, followed by a student critique. We’ll have more details regarding the student critique as the date approaches, but we would love to see as many people involved as possible!

The next meeting after that will be on Wednesday, April 17th, which will feature a visiting (as of now undetermined) artist lecture.

We have some film nights in the works as well, where we’ll watch a collection of short and or feature films and then discuss their content. We will post updates as the plans fall into place! We’re aiming to have our first on Friday, March 29th.

Should there be any questions, don’t hesitate to send them our way.

Guest speaker Patrick DeGuira will be giving a lecture discussing his work on Wednesday, February 20th at 9pm. DeGuira is a local artist and professor at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film. Here’s a blurb from his artist statement for Zeitgeist Gallery:

“I would describe myself as a figurative artist. An artist, not so much interested in the body, but objects that stand in for the body. Photographs, mirrors, canes, tools, chairs, megaphones, sounds, staircases, ladders, animals, abstractions, and text make up the figure that “acts out” in the work that I construct. I began calling my sculpture, two-dimensional works, and installations “props” several years ago. Like Allen McCollum’s “surrogates” or Marcel Duchamp’s “readymades”, I needed a way to implement various meanings to what I described as art making: which concern the concepts of death, humor, domesticity, and emotional communication. These “props” are constructed to act as a physical or textual device within a narrative (or a conceptual plinth) and can be viewed as things that have been imprinted by a figurative body or figurative language. Another fundamental activity found in my work, is resolving the visual implications of emotion through the use of abstract patterns and phenomenological systems.”

CO. H officially calls for submissions to the 2012-2013 Winter Show! The Winter Show will focus on bodies of work that well represent the featured artists. All medias are welcome. Please take photos of all work with artist name and title and burn to a CD. Juried by Company H with professors Kristi Hargrove and Ron Lambert, the Winter Show will feature bodies of work judged on conceptual prowess, craftsmanship, and continuity. Submissions are due JANUARY 26 (the friday after the first full week of classes). Can’t wait to see your work!

Will Tucker gave an artist talk at the last meeting, describing his undergrad, grad and recent work. In his work consists of an element of place, specific place that is, recycled, repurposed, and not concretely defined. His work is involved in processes over time where things are not static, but changing.

The next Company H meeting is THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3rd! Renowned Nashville-based artist Adrienne Outlaw will be giving a short lecture and hosting a studio visit! In addition to being a notable and accomplished artist, Adrienne also runs the alternative gallery Seed Space, which is located in her studio at Chestnut Street. This is not a meeting to miss!

Meeting details are a little different this time — the meeting will start at 7:00pm and we will meet at Adrienne’s studio - which is located in the Chestnut Building, 427 Chestnut Street. If you need directions, would like to carpool, or have any other questions, e-mail us at companyh@watkins.edu
