Thomas Hirschhorn, Bataille Monument, 2002

For the occasion of Documenta 11 Hirschhorn decided to construct a grunge-installation monument to the surrealist philosopher George Bataille. Moreover, he decided that this monument must be situated outside the principal venues of Documenta, the middle-class fine art festival that takes over the city of Kassel every four or five years. He chose as his location the Friedrich-Wöhler Siedlung, a mixed Turkish-German social housing complex in a low socio-economic suburb of Kassel.

All summer we’ll be periodically posting collaborative pieces by artists we know and artists we don’t in order to inspire and PUMP YOU UP for our summer show, Strange Material !!!
